Furcadia's hardware

Furcadia's owners plan upgrades, and are selling discounted DragonScales (store credit) to fund the new hardware.

Dragon's Eye may not get many takers for the US$500 600-scale offer (including a "Furcadia-For-Life" tag), but smaller lots are available.

Those who liked the Floofs or Fluffs from earlier this month can also purchase them as temporary avatars for $4.99.

While the sale itself isn't that unusual, the announcement gives details of Furcadia's server hardware and connections.

  • Our Pounce [IM] server is currently an Intel Xeon Quad Core E5405 CPU, 2GB RAM, and a 500GB hard drive. We'll be replacing it with an Intel Quad Core X3323, 4GB RAM, 2x 1 Terabyte HD in a RAID-1 configuration.
  • Our web and email servers are both Intel Core 2 Duo 2.66 E6700 CPUs, 2GB RAM, 2x 160GB HD (without RAID). They'll be moving to the same configuration as the Pounce server. (X3323 CPU, 4GB RAM, 2x 1 Terabyte in RAID-1)
  • Finally, our game server machine is moving from an AMD Opteron Dual CPU Dual Core 8212, 16GB RAM, 2x 300GB drives in RAID-1 configuration + small IDE hard drive; to a Dual Intel Quad Core E5520, 16GB RAM, 2x 1 Terabyte drives in RAID-1.

We're also moving to SATA-2 drives to modernize, we had been using SATA on Pounce, IDE on web & email, and SCSI and IDE on the game server. [...] We'll also be moving from our current rack configuration, where all of our machines share a 1000 megabit-per-second link to the fiber optic internet backbones at Layered, to a setup where each one of our machines has a 1000 megabit link of its own. [...]

We are also going from our current bandwidth limit of 3 terabytes per month all the way up to a whopping 10 terabytes per month!
